When we first begin to start marketing our products or services online, We have to think about the different strategies available and how to put them to use.

Whatever it is that we need to do on the internet, whether it be to build a website or simply advertise a product, You will always need to understand the instructions on how to do it, and that in itself can be a nightmare if your new to it all. It will seem as though you are a foreigner in another country trying to understand different language that is meant to be YOUR OWN LANGUAGE !

Below you will find a short glossary of some of the basic common terms used online.

Affiliate

An affiliate is someone who has joined a program within a business and is paid a commission for marketing the businesses products or sevices. Affiliates can be paid for each visitor or customer that they generate.

Autoresponder

An Autoresponder is a computer program that acts like your answering machine for e-mail messages.You can write out your message in advance.

Once your Autoresponder has been turned on,anyone sending e-mail to your e-mail address will automatically receive your message without any need for you to send it manually!

Banner

A banner is a picture that contains a link to another website. This form of advertising is widely used on the Internet. Banners are like small billboards or signs that can be almost any size, they are often seen at the top of commercial Websites.

BBS – stands for bulletin board system.

Cybernaut – You are one if you use the Internet often.

Download – transmission of information from a source on the Internet directly into your computer.

Domain Name

Your domain name is the internet address of your website such as http://www.incomefromhom.com/ or http://www.incomefromhome.com.au/

Once a domain name has been registered, no one else can register that same domain name just as there can never be two homes with the same address.

Email

An e-mail is an electronic mailbox.You can send and receive letters instantly, without having to use traditional physical methods such as paper,envelopes and stamps.

Encrypted Message – a message that is in code.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions.

Flame – To send someone a nasty note.

File – Computer documents that you work with. You can send files over the Internet.

Gateway

Gateways are special Websites,usually one page, designed for affiliates to use to generate sales and / or enrol other affiliates. These Gateway Websites contain an affiliate ID number so that all sales and activity generated by an affiliate can be precisely tracked and credited.

Host

The host of your website is the server. Your website sits on the hard disk of a big computer called a server that is connected to the Internet 24 hours a day. The server can also host other websites simultaneously.

HTML

HyperText Markup Language.

The language used for many web pages. It provides a means to describe the structure of text-based information in a document by denoting certain text as links, headings, paragraphs, lists, etc, and to supplement that text with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects. HTML is written in the form of tags, surrounded by angle brackets. HTML can also describe, to some degree, the appearance and semantics of a document, and can include embedded scripting language code (such as JavaScript)

Java – A computer programming language for the
distribution of digital information. Because Java can "talk" to any computer operating system, it is ideal for something so wildly diverse as the Internet.

Leveraged Income

Income earned through other people's efforts. An affiliate marketer can earn commissions within some network systems , When other affiliates that they have signed up to the program, purchase products/services or sell them to others. Sometimes they can earn income when the affiliates that their affiliates sign up and also purchase or sell products and so on.

Log On – connecting to the Internet or a membership site where you use a username and password to identify yourself.

Lurk – reading and understanding the posted messages in a newsgroup before posting your own.

Mailing List – an e-mail list of people who want to get information about a specific subject (e.g. person, place, products, services, etc.).

Nettiquette – from net and etiquette, it simply means good manners on the Internet.

Newsgroup – a place where individuals post and retrieve messages, except that these messages concern a single topic. You can read or join with your own news, views and comments.

Residual Income

One of the types of income you can sometimes earn as an affiliate. Residual Income is income that keeps coming in, around the clock, month after month, year after year. It's like a royalty where you write a book or record a song and get paid forever on it.

Sequential Autoresponder

This a computer program that will AUTOMATICALLY send out MORE THAN ONE pre-written e-mail.It has been set to follow-up with different messages in sequence. You can specify the interval between each pre-written messages and as many e-mail messages as you wish.

Snail Mail – Term referring to speed of the postal system compared to the speed of e-mail.

Spam

A common term used to indicate unsolicited commercial e-mail. An easy way to discribe spam would be the mail within your email that resembles the "junk mail" you receive in your regular mailbox that you have not agreed to be sent to you. Spam is illegal in many countries.

Text Ad

A form of advertising used both on Websites and in offline areas, such as in newspaper classified sections. Text ads are usually short, attention-grabbing ads focusing on a particular product or opportunity.

URL – Uniform Resource Locator - Also known as website address

Website

A website can act as your physical business premises,It can display your business in the form of a brochure or sales letter but in electronically, form that you view on the internet.

You can display products with photos or illustrations and words that discribe them. Other people can view the products on your website from their computers,phones etc with an Internet Browser from anywhere in the world.

Web Browser

An Internet/Web Browser allows your visitors to view your website.
